Effects of Smoking in Women

Women are as susceptible to the effects of nicotine as men. They are in fact more addictive to nicotine than men.

Women smokers are at a greater risk of developing cancer of the vulvar and the cervix. Heavy smokers are 80 percent more susceptible to cervical cancer. Smoking is known to cause 19% cervical cancer and 40% of vulvar cancer.

Smoking is also known to increase the risk for periodontal disease and oral cancer. Smokers also suffer from chronic bad breath, teeth staining, increased tartar deposits, tooth loss and exaggerated wrinkles in the face.

Women smokers are also at a high risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Middle aged smoking women are three times more susceptible to heart diseases than middle aged non smoking women.

Among deaths due to cancer, lung cancer is known to be the highest among women surpassing breast cancer. It contributes to about 25% of cancer deaths among women.

Smoking is also known to increase bone fragility and hence leads to osteoporosis. Tobacco affects estrogens and hence reduces bone density. A pack of cigarette a day decreases the bone density by about 5 to 10 percent more than that in non smokers.

Smoking affects the normal hormone functioning in women. Smoking is known to alter the woman's menstrual cycle and causes an early menopause. Estrogen replacement therapy protects postmenstrual women against the risk of osteoporosis. But increased cardiovascular and other risks due to smoking negate these benefits. While using estrogens women face an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke.

Using the immense Help to stop smoking available, women must sincerely try to quit smoking.

Effects of smoking on Pregnant women

Many researchers in the medical field have observed that the effect of smoking on pregnant ladies is very dangerous. The effect is on development of intrauterine. Those women who smoke stand high chance of this. Nicotine and other ingredients of tobacco cannot be stopped by the placental barrier, thus risking the very development of child in the womb.

Studies show that those women who smoke, tend to give birth to babies who have lower size and weight. Proven studies show that those women who smoke during the prenatal phase, tend to cause great effect on the intellectual development of the baby. The comparision was done between children of age 4 to 5 as well as 6 to 7. In all, 40 children were put on this study, with both kinds of samples, mothers who smoked and mothers who dint smoke. They were tested on Wechsler scale. The result showed that cultural and social development was same, but intellectual development had huge difference. Those children whose mothers did not smoke had 22 IQ points more than those children whose mothers smoked.

Thus, its imperative that pregnant ladies simply quit smoking before they cause harmful effect on a life which is growing inside them!

Contribution of Smoking to Diabetes

The relation between diabetes and smoking give smokers another reason to quit smoking. Besides the innumerable diseases that smoking causes, diabetes is another disease added to the list.

Diabetes is a disease related to the pancreas which is an organ behind the stomach. The function of pancreas is to release fluid called insulin into the bloodstream. Insulin helps to bring into use the sugars and fats obtained from food consumed. A person develops diabetes when the pancreas either does not make insulin or doesn't make enough quantity of it. Diabetes is also developed if the insulin doesnt work properly. Diabetes can further cause complications like eye disease, kidney disease, heart disease and nerve disease. The reasons for developing diabetes include family history of diabetes, obesity, physical stress, use of certain medicines, injury to pancreas, autoimmune disease, hypertension, elevated blood cholesterol, age, smoking, alcohol and pregnancy.

Research proves that smoking increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Smoking 16 to 25 cigarettes per day increases the risk of developing diabetes to three times that of a non smoker. Smoking not only increases the risk of developing the disease but also makes it difficult to manage diabetes for those who already have it. Smoking combined with diabetes may lead to retinopathy, stroke, heart disease, vascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage and foot problems.

The probability of developing diabetes increases if combined with smoking and other risk factors are also present. Immediate Help to stop smoking must be sought after before further complications arise.

Another Contribution of Smoking- Aging

Research proves that there are two kinds of aging. Aging caused due to genes inherited by us is called intrinsic aging. Extrinsic aging is caused by environmental factors such as exposure to suns rays or Smoking addiction .

Intrinsic aging is a natural and continuous aging process and begins in the mid 20s. During this process the production of collagen in the skin decreases and elastin which is the substance that enables the skin to snap back into place loses its elasticity. Shedding of dead cells becomes slow and turn over of new skin decreases slightly. The signs of intrinsic aging are appearance of fine wrinkles, thin and transparent skin. There is a loss of underlying fat which leads to hollowed cheeks and eye sockets. There is a noticeable loss of firmness of hands and the neck. Bone loss causes shrinking of the bone from the skin which causes sagging skin. There is also a decrease in sufficient sweat to cool the skin. There is hair loss, unwanted hair and graying of hair.

Many external factors act together with the normal aging process and cause premature aging of skin. The major reason for premature aging of skin is exposure to the sun. The other external factors are facial expressions, gravity, sleeping positions and smoking. Freckles, age spots, spider veins on face, rough and leathery skin, loose skin and blotchy complexion are signs of extrinsic aging. Cigarette smoking leads to biochemical changes in our body which leads to premature aging. Research shows that a person who smokes more than 10 cigarettes a day for more than 10 years is much more likely to develop deeply wrinkled leathery skin than a non smoker. It has also been proved that a person who smokes for a number of years develops an unhealthy yellowish hue to their complexion.

It is seen that there is less face wrinkling and improved skin tone among smokers who quit smoking.

Using Self Hypnosis To Stop Smoking

Hi Everyone

Since I'm new, I thought I'd contribute with some info on using self hypnosis (similar to meditation) to kick the bad habit, smoking...

Theres a lot of talk about using self hypnosis to stop smoking. In fact using self hypnosis to stop smoking is one of the most commonly utilized methods to quit this dirty habit. But is it really possible to kick the butt using self hypnosis, and if so how?

The good news is that most people can be hypnotized, and fairly easy at that. The people who cannot be hypnotized are most often resisting it, or trying to prove the system wrong. But if youre willing to accept hypnosis, youre more than likely able to enjoy the benefits thereof.

Using self hypnosis, you can put yourself into a light trance, or heightened state of consciousness (similar to that of meditation), where you then utilize the power of suggestion. What is the power of suggestion, you ask? This is simply another form of affirmation. You can create affirmations such as:
  • I am fit and healthy
  • I take good care of my body
  • I respect my body and my health
What then happens, over time, is that these beliefs (or affirmations, suggestions) become imprinted in your consciousness, making the process of giving up a bad habit like smoking (which is neither fit, nor healthy, nor respectful towards your body) much easier. The main factor here is that you are working from the inside out (changing your mindset, which in turn changes your habits), as opposed to trying to work backwards.

We all know and understand that our thoughts become things our world is manifest from our mind. Therefore using hypnosis to change a habit is certainly one of the most effective ways to quit a bad habit, like smoking.

But how does the average person use self hypnosis?

Hypnosis, like meditation, is a skill and art form which can take many years to master traditionally. The good news is that there are now many self hypnosis audio programs available. The way that these programs work is by using different sound waves in each ear to direct the brain into a hypnotic or meditative state. The result is exactly the same, and its much easier to achieve the correct state of mind using these programs.

Whether you decide to try using self hypnosis to stop smoking, or any other method, I wish you all the best. A healthier, happier life awaits you.

Good Luck!

Passive Smoking and Its Effect! Read This

Nearly every smoker knows the dangers of smoking, yet they do not quit despite knowing the outcomes. They also try to rationalize their habit saying "It only hurts me, so if i am not worried, why are you?". But unfortunately, these smokers do no know that apart from hurting themselves, they also pose a major threat to people who are around them. Time and again researchers have insisted that passive smoking is more hazardous than the regular smoking. Many times smokers don't see that there might be a prenant lady sitting beside them or there might be small children who might be inhaling the smoke exhaled by them. All those who are nearby a smoker while he smokes have dangerous effects on their health.

I am sure there are some of you who want to know what passive smoking is. Passive smoking is also termed as "second hand smoking". Second hand smoking is the combination of smoke coming out of burning cigarette and the smoke coming out of the smokers mouth or nose. This combined smoke contains more amounts of harmful chemicals than the regular cigarette inhaled smoke. It includes two times more Tar and Nicotine. So that means people who live around smokers stand higher chance risk than the smoker himself. Passive smoking causes lung diseases, heart diseases and other illness, when a person is constantly exposed to such combined smoke.

The only advice to those who are still smoking is that if not for yourself, think about those who live around you.

But best advice is that you QUIT SMOKING!

Top 5 Ways to Quit Smoking

As we all know, smoking is a true addiction and is very hard to stop. Here with the help of http://healthcombo.com/, i have produced a list of the top 5 ways to get rid of your smoking habits and fast!

1. Interact with and join a group of smokers who want to quit also

Go down to your local community centre, and there is sure to be a ‘quit smoking’ group where you can discuss your troubles and experiences. Here, you will see people who have the same problem in quitting as you do, if not worse. Here, you should speak your mind with your peers and listen to their methods of how they are quitting. If you see someone there with a good method, why not ask them whether you can join them in quitting as it is giving you great motivation to perverse with your problem. Asking questions will further your chances of being successful in giving up smoking.

2. Patches or even chewing gum!

You are able to purchase patches from your pharmacy, or you can get prescribed from your doctor. This will only work effectively if you reduce the amount you smoke cigarettes otherwise you’re using patches as well as cigarettes which is more nicotine. Thus, try to cut down to start with, to just patches, where you will see huge benefits. Once you are comfortable with patches, try to move onto chewing hard candy or chewing gum as you are still effectively stopping your craving.

3. Keep your body moving and dispose of everything to do with Smoking!

In order to continue on what looks like a long quest to quitting smoking, you should always keep yourself both physically and mentally active. If you don’t and sit on your sofa all day thinking about cigarettes, you will get up just to get a cigarette and sit back down and carry on this method until you’re on the verge of death. Instead, be active, physically and mentally whether it be studying, working or playing sports. It is very good for cleansing your brain from the bad habit of smoking. Thus, when you are actively doing something you will not even remember what a cigarette was.
Additionally, many of the previous smokers I know have been following the saying ‘out of sight, out of mind.’ This means you should dispose of all your cigarette packs and ashtrays because you could get a craving at any time and if it’s not there and you know it’s not there, you won’t even bother to think about it!

4. Beat your physical side with Laser Therapy Treatment

Laser Therapy Treatment is a expensive treatment, especially in these hard economic times, but it will be worthwhile since you are probably saving in the long term because of the amount of money you spend on cigarettes anyway! Though expensive, this is probably the fastest way of getting rid of your craving. My personal friend took this treatment and it has saved him $5000 in the last 2 years and the treatment only cost him $800. Great investment in the long term and instant results are shown!

5. Keep going… keep motivated

Staying motivated is key. To stay motivated, watch these programs on both TV and Youtube, showing the effects of smoking. In addition, think that it has made you uglier and has now set a date for your death. To change this, you MUST stop, if you want to see your kids grow up, you MUST keep going, if you want to keep living, you MUST quit smoking!
